Every Golfer’s Nightmare: The 10 Toughest Shots in the Game

Golf is a funny game. Some shots feel effortless… and others make you wonder why you didn’t just pick up pickleball. We put together a list of the 10 hardest shots in golf—and some quick tips to help you handle them with a little more swagger (and fewer four-letter words).

The 10 Hardest Shots in Golf

1. The buried bunker lie

That “fried egg” look isn’t as tasty as it sounds. Open the face, dig those feet in, and swing steep like you’re chopping wood.

2. The 40-yard bunker shot

Too far for a soft splash, too close for a full swing. Pick a less-lofted wedge, commit to a clean strike, and trust the roll.

3. The tight lie chip

No grass, no margin for error. Play it like a putt with a wedge—quiet hands, crisp contact, and keep the leading edge out of trouble.

4. The short-sided flop

It’s the golf equivalent of a magic trick. Open the face, accelerate through, and pray gravity’s on your side.

5. The downhill 6-footer

It looks straight, but it’s not. Pick a dying speed, trust your line, and don’t let that three-putt fear live rent-free in your head.

6. The 3-foot knee-knocker

Simple distance, impossible pressure. Treat it like every other putt—routine, confidence, and a firm stroke.

7. The island green shot

Water, water everywhere. Take one more club, swing smooth, and aim for the fat part of the green. Your ego doesn’t get a scorecard.

8. The tee shot with OB left and water right

A.k.a. “the chiropractor’s dream.” Trust your target, swing free, and don’t let the hazards rent space in your mind.

9. The awkward stance shot

Ball above your feet, below your feet, or halfway up a hill—it’s never fair. Adjust your posture, swing with balance, and accept it won’t be pretty.

10. The recovery punch-out

You could go for the hero shot. You should take your medicine, punch it low, and give yourself a chance at par.

Moral of the story: Golf will always throw these nightmares at you. But with the right mindset (and maybe a few extra sleeves of balls), you can handle them.
